Powell Gardens Engagement Photos with a Romantic, Whimsical Twist

Missouri Wedding Photographer | June 2025


After taking time off to welcome my daughter into the world, there couldn’t have been a sweeter way to return to photography than this dreamy June engagement session with my cousin Kellie and her fiancé, JT. Set against the blooming beauty of Powell Gardens in Missouri, this shoot was filled with sunshine, laughter, elegance—and a surprise dinosaur or two (yes, really).

Kellie and JT traveled all the way from Illinois for this session, and it meant so much to have them here. Beyond the stunning visuals and joyful energy, this shoot held deep personal meaning for me: not only was it my first session back postpartum, but it was also the first time Kellie got to meet my daughter. Familiarity with the couple made for a relaxed, joyful day—and set the tone for a truly effortless return to doing what I love.

A Garden Engagement Full of Romance and Playfulness


Kellie and JT have the kind of connection that’s both elegant and wildly fun. From the moment they arrived, it was clear how much they adore each other—not just in the way they look at each other, but in how easily they laugh together. Their love is playful and romantic, full of little moments that felt completely natural in front of the camera.

When Kellie described the kind of setting they wanted—whimsical, romantic, and elegant—I knew immediately that Powell Gardens was the perfect fit. The expansive botanical grounds, tranquil pond, and fairytale-like paths offered everything they were looking for and more. It’s one of my favorite locations in Missouri, and it delivered the exact dreamy garden atmosphere they envisioned.

Outfit Inspiration: Elegant Florals, Soft Suiting & Casual Play

One of the standout elements of this session was how Kellie planned three thoughtful outfit changes, each perfectly curated to express a different mood of their relationship.

Dreamy Garden Glamor


Kellie began the session in a long, fitted floral dress, bringing that effortless garden elegance to life. JT matched her energy in a tailored suit—classic and refined. The look popped beautifully against the lush greens and vibrant summer blooms of Powell Gardens.

Floral & Flowy Romance


For their second look, Kellie stayed in the floral theme but changed dresses, keeping the romantic tone while adding variety to the shoot. These images felt especially timeless—like something straight out of a storybook.

Playful and Casual


For the final part of the session, both Kellie and JT changed into casual jeans and t-shirts. This gave them space to really relax and goof off together, the perfect way to wrap up a session.

A Session with a Dinosaur-Sized Twist 🦖


Now for the unexpected: Powell Gardens was hosting a Jurassic Park-themed event during our session! Life-sized animatronic dinosaurs were scattered throughout the gardens. Yep—right there among the roses and ponds were roaring T. rexes and triceratops.

What could’ve been a distraction turned into one of the most memorable (and hilarious) parts of the shoot. Kellie and JT rolled with it like pros, dodging dinos and laughing through it all. Their ability to embrace the moment made everything even more fun and spontaneous.

Returning to Photography with Full Heart (and Full Sun)


The weather that day? Very sunny. Very hot. But you’d never know it looking at these two. They embraced the warmth, walking hand-in-hand through wide open paths, shaded garden trails, and quiet lakeside corners.

From a personal perspective, this session was everything I needed. Coming back to work postpartum was emotional and a little intimidating—but having my cousin as a client, seeing her meet my daughter, and working in a place I love made it feel like coming home in the best way.

This session reminded me of what I love most: capturing connection, joy, and those small in-between moments that tell the real story.

Kellie and JT will be tying the knot in early 2026, and I already know their wedding is going to be one for the books. Their engagement session captured more than just beautiful photos—it captured who they are: full of heart, full of laughter, and full of love.
